Wild weather and flooding lashes Gypsy Point Road and Mallacoota
A landslide has completely cut off Mallacoota and Gipsy Point today, as authorities warned locals of a landslide the size of a house.
In the past 24 hours the area received 150mm of rain fall. Emergency crews earlier closed the Gypsy Point Road and the Mallacoota-Genoa Road due to the landslide, which was described as “the size of a house”. Tim Wiebusch, from the Victorian SES, said it was likely the slope would continue to cause issues over the coming hours and days for the only road in and out of Mallacoota and Gipsy Point. “We expect the road will be open, but residents need to be aware that the Genoa River could overflow and cut off that road again later today.”It’s in a rather remote location and we’re lucky there has been no traffic caught up in that landslide, but it is likely to cause isolation.”
